Status: Exploratory conceptual hypothesis offered for interdisciplinary critique and possible test design. Not a claim of a demonstrated non-local field, microtubular memory transfer, or donor personality transfer.
Abstract
We ask whether conscious experience might be better understood as a local expression of a wider, presently uncharacterized relational or field-like process, rather than as something necessarily generated de novo by neuronal machinery.
Within this field-interface hypothesis, microtubules and other intracellular structures are candidate mediators of organization, selective coupling, and persistence of information in biological systems.
We further distinguish two putative roles: (1) dynamic participation in an embodied episode of consciousness and (2) a residual, local imprint that may outlast a particular organismal configuration. The latter is not equivalent to transporting a person, identity, or complete memory.
We identify currently relevant findings in quantum-biological microtubule models and non-neural cellular memory-like signaling, then propose separable laboratory and prospective clinical tests.
The proposed field and its coupling mechanism remain hypothetical; present evidence cannot establish them.
## 1. Core proposition: field, interface, imprint
The model has three analytically distinct layers.
**Field:** a conjectured wider process in which consciousness might participate, without assuming that a physical field has already been detected.
**Interface:** biological structures that may select, organize, or transduce relevant physical information; microtubules are an especially interesting candidate, not an exclusive one.
**Imprint:** relatively persistent state-dependence in living tissue, potentially storing traces of past interactions without containing the former person or a full autobiographical episode.
The metaphor is a dancer leaving footprints: **the trace is not the dancer.**
The scientific question is whether there are identifiable and reproducible information-bearing physical traces, how long they persist, and what can be read from them.
The conjecture does not presume that currently known molecular memory mechanisms, such as gene regulation or immune conditioning, must involve non-local consciousness.
## 2. What existing research does — and does not — establish
– **Microtubule physics:** Gassab, Pusuluk and Craddock (2026) model transient quantum correlation flow in tryptophan networks; they do not demonstrate the existence of a consciousness field or personal memories stored in microtubules [1].
– **Biophysical sensitivity:** Zadeh-Haghighi and colleagues (2026) report isotope-sensitive tubulin polymerization consistent with radical-pair effects. This is relevant to quantum biology but is not a direct consciousness experiment [2].
– **Consciousness models:** Wiest (2025) argues for a quantum microtubule substrate using anesthesia-related findings. This is an actively debated interpretation, and it differs from the present hypothesis insofar as we ask whether an interface could mediate rather than originate experience [3].
– **Non-neural cellular memory:** Kukushkin and colleagues (2024) demonstrate a spacing effect in non-neural human cell lines mediated by cellular signaling. This supports persistent cellular response patterns, not autobiographical donor-memory transfer [4].
– **Transplant reports:** some recipients report changed preferences or perceived donor correspondences. A 2026 scoping review notes methodological limitations and finds transfer of donor memory or identity unestablished, while advocating prospective studies [5].
– **Resuscitation research:** AWARE-II documents investigations of experiences around cardiac arrest, without establishing non-local consciousness or validating the mechanism proposed here [6].
## 3. The distinctive conceptual separation
Our central distinction is between the participating consciousness and information potentially retained in its former biological interface.
If transplanted tissue displays donor-associated information, the logical conclusion would not be that donor consciousness or donor identity has moved into the recipient.
The first empirical question would be what encoded information exists in the tissue and what pathways could account for any reported correspondence. Ordinary cellular persistence and post-transplant adaptation must remain explicit alternative explanations.
This reframing connects quantum-biophysical research with non-neural cellular information processing, clinical transplant experiences, and reports of altered consciousness — not by treating these as equivalent evidence, but by asking whether a single candidate architecture can generate independently testable predictions.
## 4. Candidate research programme
### Study A — Physical persistence in cytoskeletal states
Compare well-characterized microtubule/tubulin preparations under repeated, temporally patterned perturbations.
Measure changes in optical, electrical, vibrational, and assembly/disassembly dynamics after stimulation and washout, using matched non-microtubule controls and blinded analysis.
Pre-register duration and specificity predictions.
A durable response would demonstrate state-dependent material information; it would not by itself demonstrate consciousness.
### Study B — Cellular encoding and necessity
In cultured non-neural cells, test whether microtubule-targeted perturbations modify the persistence or readout of learned stimulus-response patterns beyond their general effects on cell viability, transport, cytoskeletal organization, and ERK/CREB pathways.
Independently verify whether any response can be explained by known biochemical signaling.
Orthogonal pharmacological/genetic controls would be necessary.
### Study C — Prospective transplant study
With appropriate consent and ethics oversight, collect preregistered, timestamped recipient accounts before any donor information is disclosed.
Obtain independent donor-characteristic information through a firewall.
Have blinded adjudicators score pre-specified matches against base rates, chance, and matched non-donor comparisons.
Control for medications, expectancy, culture, transplant adjustment, and retrospective selection.
Report all positive and null results.
### Study D — Discriminating field-mediated claims
Only if Studies A–C reveal reproducible anomalies not explained by standard routes, develop a formal coupling model with a measurable variable, quantitative predictions, and a procedure capable of falsifying it.
Without that formalization, a wider consciousness field remains philosophical rather than an experimentally specified mechanism.
## 5. What could count against the hypothesis?
– Microtubule-specific perturbation fails to affect persistence once known cellular mechanisms and toxicity are controlled.
– Apparently donor-associated correspondences disappear under blinded prospective assessment or are explained by base rates and post-transplant influences.
– No operationally distinct measurement or falsifiable prediction can be produced for the proposed field-interface relationship.
## 6. Questions for specialist readers
Which microtubule observables are presently reliable enough to support pre-registered persistence tests?
What experiments best distinguish functional quantum dynamics from classical molecular state-dependence?
Could microtubule contribution be assessed causally without confusing structural disruption with altered information handling?
And what evidence threshold would justify moving from a biological interface hypothesis toward a field-coupling hypothesis?
We offer this as an invitation to research dialogue, including critical feedback and collaboration on a testable formulation.
No claim is made that the proposed mechanism is already established.
