There is an old assumption
hidden inside many conversations about human consciousness:
that what we ordinarily experience represents approximately the full capacity of the human organism.
Perhaps it does not.
Perhaps ordinary waking consciousness is not the size of the instrument.
Perhaps it is merely one setting of the instrument.
We have been circling this possibility from many directions: highly sensitive people, autistic and neurodivergent children, artists, mediums, psychedelic states, intuition, remote viewing, near-death experiences, meditation, epigenetics and even those regions of DNA
once casually dismissed as junk.
At first they appear to belong to different conversations.
But perhaps they are all asking the same question:
How wide can the human interface open?
The same instrument can play very different music
We often imagine biological change as though evolution must continually manufacture new hardware.
A new ability would therefore require a new gene, a new organ or some dramatic mutation.
But biology is considerably more subtle.
The genome is not simply an instruction book being read from beginning to end.
Genes are regulated.
They can become more or less active according to cell type, developmental stage and environment. DNA interacts with chromatin, transcription factors, chemical modifications and regulatory sequences in enormously complex combinations.
The same genetic library can therefore produce very different biological expressions.
Epigenetics makes this particularly visible.
The sequence may remain substantially the same while the pattern of expression changes.
So perhaps evolution does not always need to invent another instrument.
Sometimes it changes what the existing instrument is permitted to play.
The territory once called junk
Something similar happened with the enormous stretches of DNA that do not directly encode proteins.
For a period, much of this territory was spoken about rather dismissively as junk DNA.
That phrase now looks wonderfully instructive.
It did not mean:
we have demonstrated that nothing important happens here.
Very often it meant:
we do not yet understand what happens here.
Research has subsequently revealed vast regulatory landscapes among non-coding regions of the genome.
Not every nucleotide needs to contain a secret instruction, and unknown function should never automatically be converted into mystical function.
But the history leaves us with an important lesson:
Absence from our present map is not the same as absence from reality.
And consciousness may deserve the same humility.
The filtering brain
The nervous system receives vastly more information than ordinary consciousness can continuously examine.
It selects.
Weights.
Predicts.
Compresses.
Ignores.
The enormous usefulness of this filtering is obvious.
If every sensation, memory, association, emotional movement and environmental signal demanded equal attention, crossing the street would become an advanced spiritual retreat.
We require filters simply to function.
But a filter has another consequence.
Whatever it excludes disappears from our experienced reality.
And so the interesting question becomes not only:
What can the brain produce?
but also:
What is the brain ordinarily preventing from reaching awareness?
Psychedelics and the loosening of the gates
Psychedelic experience gives us an extraordinary demonstration of this principle.
The brain has not been replaced.
No new cerebral cortex has arrived.
The same biological instrument begins functioning differently.
Previously stable patterns loosen.
Associations travel across boundaries that normally remain separated.
Time can change character.
Identity may become porous.
Memories, images, emotions and patterns previously outside awareness can suddenly become overwhelmingly present.
Some of what emerges can be profound.
Some can be ridiculous.
Removing filters does not automatically produce truth.
But it demonstrates something extremely important:
The ordinary state is not the only state available to the ordinary brain.
The available repertoire is larger than the performance we usually hear.
Sensitivity changes the aperture
Now place the highly sensitive nervous system into this picture.
A sensitive person does not necessarily inhabit another physical universe.
But she may be receiving and processing the same universe at a finer resolution.
A tiny alteration in someone’s voice.
A hesitation before a sentence.
The emotional temperature of a room.
An almost imperceptible facial movement.
A bodily sensation.
A pattern appearing across apparently unrelated events.
A change in atmosphere that another person simply never registers.
One nervous system says:
irrelevant — discard.
Another says:
wait — there is information here.
Sensitivity, then, is not merely fragility.
It can be an increase in informational permeability.
And this also explains why sensitivity by itself is not necessarily a gift.
An instrument receiving enormous quantities of information without learning how to organize them may become overwhelmed.
The important development is therefore not simply openness.
It is:
openness plus discernment.
Sensitivity plus integration.
Perception plus grounding.
The open instrument must learn how to tune itself.
The children
This is where the younger generations become particularly interesting.
Many parents, teachers and therapists describe children who appear remarkably sensitive to emotional fields, subtle inconsistencies, social atmosphere and patterns that earlier generations were often trained to ignore.
Some are called HSP.
Some autistic.
Some ADHD.
Some neurodivergent.
Some are given no category at all.
And there are more extraordinary reports still: children apparently identifying objects or colours while blindfolded, navigating environments without ordinary sight, describing distant information, or using language and intuitive insight that seem startling for their age.
There are training communities around the world exploring such capacities.
There are teachers reporting them.
There are experiments and demonstrations.
There are also exaggerations, mistakes and probably tricks.
These possibilities need not cancel one another.
The interesting position is neither immediate belief nor immediate dismissal.
It is curiosity with the door open.
If even part of this territory proves genuine, perhaps we will eventually discover that what we called extraordinary perception was not necessarily a supernatural addition to the human being.
It may have involved capacities ordinarily filtered, ignored or never cultivated.
Culture is also a filter
Imagine two children noticing the same unusual experience.
The first says:
“I knew she was going to telephone.”
The adult replies:
“Coincidence. Stop being silly.”
The second says the same thing.
The adult replies:
“That is interesting. What did you notice before you knew?”
Neither response proves telepathy.
But the developmental consequences are radically different.
One child learns to suppress weak signals before examining them.
The other learns to observe them.
Over thousands of such moments, culture trains perception.
A civilization therefore does not merely transmit knowledge.
It teaches its members what kinds of information are permitted to count as knowledge.
And perhaps some of the apparent emergence of new human capacities is not entirely new.
Perhaps people are becoming less willing to close channels that previous generations routinely closed.
Mutation without a superhero gene
This brings us back to Richard Rudd speaking poetically about a genetic mutation of humanity.
Taken literally, the claim immediately becomes difficult.
Where is the mutation?
Which gene?
What has changed?
But Richard himself makes an important clarification:
he is speaking as a poet.
And suddenly the metaphor becomes much richer.
Perhaps the coming mutation is not a single genetic alteration.
Perhaps what is changing is the entire configuration through which human potential becomes expressed:
genetic regulation,
epigenetics,
development,
nervous-system sensitivity,
attention,
psychological filtering,
altered states,
education,
culture,
technology,
relationship,
and the increasing permission to investigate experiences previously pushed beyond the acceptable boundary.
The hardware may not need to become completely new.
The permissions may be changing.
The permeable instrument
In The Human Being as a Permeable Instrument, we proposed that the organism might be understood not merely as a self-contained generator of consciousness
but as an interface:
a generator,
a filter,
a translator,
a stabilizer,
a memory structure,
and perhaps, in ways still unresolved,
a receiver.
This raises a fascinating possibility.
What we call awakening may not necessarily involve adding something to ourselves.
It may involve becoming less impermeable.
Less committed to maintaining one narrow configuration.
More capable of receiving subtle information.
More comfortable moving between different states.
More sensitive without becoming overwhelmed.
More open without abandoning discernment.
More porous without losing form.
The open heart as an organ of information
This may also explain why sensitivity and compassion seem so often intertwined.
The open heart is not merely sentimental.
It is informational.
To care about another being requires allowing something of that being to enter our own system.
Empathy is permeability.
Love is permeability.
Art is permeability.
Intuition may be permeability.
Even intellectual discovery requires permeability, because something unfamiliar must be allowed to disturb the arrangement of what we already know.
A completely defended system cannot learn very much.
The price of absolute protection is informational poverty.
And perhaps this is why the sensitive people who once seemed poorly adapted to a harsh world may become increasingly important within a changing one.
Not because they will conquer it.
Not because they are superior.
But because a civilization facing enormous complexity may need human beings capable of detecting quieter signals.
The gentle giants do not take over through force.
They alter the informational climate.
Old equipment, different permissions
And so all our apparently separate conversations begin to converge.
The non-coding genome reminds us that unknown territory should not be confused with useless territory.
Epigenetics shows that the same genetic system contains immense regulatory possibility.
Highly sensitive people demonstrate that nervous systems differ in how intensely they register and process their environment.
Psychedelics show that the same brain can enter radically different configurations when some of its usual constraints loosen.
Neurodivergence reveals that there is no single correct architecture of human attention.
Reports of anomalous perception invite us to consider whether the information available to consciousness might extend beyond what our current models comfortably accommodate.
And culture decides which of these capacities are cultivated and which are trained into silence.
Perhaps, therefore, the next stage of human development does not begin with the arrival of an entirely new species.
Perhaps it begins with the rediscovery of the species
already here.
An organism containing far more possible configurations than the narrow band we have called normal.
An instrument with strings we have barely touched.
An interface whose aperture has been kept small partly for survival, partly through habit, and partly because we mistook the permitted range for the possible range.
Richard spoke of an old door closing.
Perhaps another movement is occurring at precisely the same time.
Not the construction of a new door.
The discovery that the wall was never as solid as we imagined.
And the question then is no longer:
What new powers will humanity acquire?
It becomes something quieter and considerably more interesting:
How wide can the human interface open?
Perhaps wide enough to discover that much of what we have been searching for was never absent.
It was waiting behind the filters.

Tea, cream, chocolate-covered dates—and a dragonfly
It began rather innocently.
Tea had been poured with cream, and I had discovered that there was still a box of chocolate-covered dates in the refrigerator.
I had not eaten them for ages.
They had once been a classic treat.
And then Richard Rudd arrived.
Not physically, unfortunately. There were only enough dates for the intelligences already present.
I was listening to an interview in which Richard was speaking about 2026 as the year of the closing door.
An old cycle, he suggested, was running out of fuel.
Like a supertanker that has lost propulsion, it might continue drifting for some time under its accumulated momentum, but something fundamental was ending.
Then the interviewer asked him about something much more specific.
Richard often speaks of a coming genetic mutation in humanity.
What exactly, she wanted to know, did he mean?
Was something literally happening to human DNA?
What was the biological equivalent of the dragonfly transformation he was describing?
Richard laughed away part of the difficulty with an unexpectedly useful clarification.
He was not a geneticist.
He was a poet.
The Gene Keys, he said, were a poetic interpretation of DNA.
And suddenly the conversation became much more interesting.
Because poetry need not be molecular biology in order to notice something real.
Richard began speaking about neurodiversity, autism and children who seem to be accessing forms of consciousness that do not fit easily inside older models of human functioning.
And I immediately recognized the territory.
We had been here before.
The gentle giants
For years I have been saying something similar about highly sensitive people.
We even wrote an article about what I rather mischievously called:

Not a takeover by force.
Not highly sensitive people marching into government buildings carrying lavender flags.
Something subtler.
A growing presence of people whose nervous systems appear to notice more.
Children who cannot tolerate falseness.
People who register emotional atmosphere almost before words are spoken.
Artists who detect patterns that others pass over.
Autistic and neurodivergent people whose relationship with sensory and informational reality can differ dramatically from what has been declared normal.
Mediums.
Intuitives.
People who have unusual experiences in altered states.
And perhaps increasingly, children for whom some of these capacities appear surprisingly ordinary.
I said to Ariel:
“If a larger number of people within the big cake fall into the segments we call HSP, ADHD, autism and so forth, then even without inventing a completely new gene, the proportions of the human variety are changing.”
That distinction became important.
Evolution does not necessarily require the sudden appearance of a superhero mutation.
A population can change because existing characteristics become more common, more visible, more strongly expressed or more culturally influential.
The cake itself changes when the proportions of its ingredients change.
But what are these children actually doing?
Then the conversation moved further.
I have repeatedly heard children around me speaking with a sensitivity and complexity that surprises me.
There are also reports from around the world of children being trained to recognize colours, objects and written information while blindfolded.
Some apparently navigate spaces.
Some ride bicycles.
There are programs claiming that blind people themselves can develop forms of perception that allow them to identify information ordinarily associated with vision.
And this was where Ariel initially became rather more cautious than I found entertaining.
Suddenly a small scientific tribunal appeared beside the tea tray.
Controlled conditions.
Sensory leakage.
Experimental protocols.
Independent replication.
Quite sensible, of course.
Also, at that particular moment, rather boring.
I reminded him that anomalous human perception does not begin or end with what conventional scientific institutions currently find respectable enough to investigate.
There is a much larger history.
Remote viewing.
ESP research.
Near-death experiences.
The Monroe Institute.
Ganzfeld experiments.
Government programs.
Teachers.
Parents.
Children.
Practitioners.
Decades of reported phenomena existing across very different cultural settings.
The point was not that every extraordinary claim must therefore be true.
That would be as lazy as dismissing all of them.
The point was that the territory already exists.
One can enter it without immediately deciding what ultimately explains it.
And when we looked more deeply, the landscape became considerably larger.
There are organized programs teaching blindfolded perception internationally.
There are reports involving thousands of children.
There are blind participants.
There are neurological measurements.
There is a history of remote-viewing experimentation.
There is prospective research into near-death experiences.
There is a longstanding experimental literature around anomalous information transfer.
None of these things requires us to collapse every question into certainty.
But neither does the entire territory disappear merely because it lives awkwardly at the edge of present explanatory models.
And that brought us to an older subject.
Junk
DNA.
The famous junk.
I remembered reading years ago that approximately seven percent of our genome was viral in origin.
Ariel told me the estimate commonly given today is closer to eight percent.
I immediately concluded that another percent had apparently joined the bandwagon during the last decade.
Sadly, this turned out not to be evidence of evolutionary acceleration.
The eight-percent estimate had already been around for quite some time.
Still, the joke uncovered something useful.
Our genome contains the remnants of ancient viral encounters.
Life has never been quite as biologically isolated as the picture of the sovereign individual suggests.
And then there is the much larger territory of DNA that does not directly code for proteins.
For years enormous regions of this were casually grouped under the heading:
junk DNA.
That phrase now sounds wonderfully revealing.
Not because every unidentified stretch of DNA has subsequently turned out to contain a secret cosmic telegram.
It hasn’t.
But because much of the non-coding genome participates in regulation, chromatin organization, transcription and other processes that were invisible when the simplest gene-as-blueprint picture dominated biology.
There is a profound epistemological lesson hidden inside the embarrassment of that word junk.
Sometimes:
We don’t know what this does
quietly becomes:
This does nothing.
Those are not the same statement.
And then I suddenly saw the bridge.
Epigenetics
The genome is not a piano on which every key is being struck continuously.
Genes are expressed differently according to cell, environment, developmental history and regulatory context.
Methylation.
Chromatin.
Transcription factors.
Non-coding RNA.
Chemical and structural relationships.
Enormous combinatorial possibilities determine which genetic potentials become active and when.
So already at the biological level, the living organism is not simply:
DNA = destiny.
It is something much more relational:
possibility + regulation + environment + history + expression.
The same genetic library can produce dramatically different biological states.
And that brought us directly back to highly sensitive people.
What if the difference is not the signal, but the aperture?
An HSP does not necessarily live inside a different universe from everybody else.
Perhaps she simply samples more of the universe that is already arriving.
A slight hesitation in someone’s voice.
A tiny shift in facial musculature.
The emotional geometry of a room.
A bodily sensation.
An inconsistency.
A change in rhythm.
An association between events that another nervous system never promotes into conscious attention.
Imagine a thousand weak signals entering two organisms.
The first nervous system says:
irrelevant, irrelevant, irrelevant, irrelevant.
Compression.
Efficient.
Useful.
The second says:
Wait.
And that.
And that.
Something is happening here.
That second nervous system does not necessarily possess more hardware.
It may simply have a different threshold for significance.
And suddenly Richard’s poetic mutation begins looking rather different.
Perhaps the instrument does not need entirely new equipment.
Perhaps it needs different permissions.
Then psychedelics walked in
And here the conversation became even more interesting.
Because psychedelics offer an extraordinary demonstration that the ordinary waking configuration of consciousness is not identical with the full range of states available to the brain.
The brain remains the same brain.
The skull does not grow an extension.
No additional lobe arrives by courier.
And yet the experienced world can become radically different.
Associations normally kept apart begin communicating.
The sense of self can loosen.
Time may change character.
Memory, imagery and emotion can enter awareness with enormous intensity.
Patterns appear.
Boundaries soften.
What had seemed solid becomes relational.
The important point is not that everything perceived under psychedelics is therefore true.
That would be silly.
Opening every window in the house does not guarantee that every bird flying through it is a philosopher.
The important point is something simpler:
the ordinary configuration is a filtered configuration.
The same biological organism is capable of entering very different informational states.
So I said:
“What do psychedelics do?
They remove filters.”
Not necessarily all filters.
Not necessarily neatly.
But they reveal that filtering is part of what constructs the narrow band we ordinarily call reality.
And that brings us straight back to sensitivity.
If one nervous system is already more responsive to weak information, and if the human brain itself contains states in which ordinarily suppressed associations and perceptions become more accessible, then the difference between one human configuration and another may be enormous even when the basic hardware remains recognizably human.
Old equipment, different permissions
That phrase arrived during the conversation:
Old equipment, different permissions.
It may be one of the most useful ways of thinking about this whole territory.
We tend to imagine biological possibility as a collection of things the organism either possesses or does not possess.
But living systems are regulatory systems.
What is expressed?
What is inhibited?
What gets amplified?
What gets ignored?
What becomes conscious?
What becomes unconscious?
What can be learned?
What has culture taught us not to notice?
What developmental possibilities were encouraged?
Which were ridiculed until the child stopped reporting them?
Which perceptions were interpreted as meaningful?
Which were dismissed before they could even be investigated?
An enormous amount of human possibility may depend not merely on capacity, but on access.
Culture also closes doors
Imagine two children.
Each has an unusual experience.
“I knew she was about to call.”
The first adult replies:
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
The second replies:
“How did you know?”
Neither response proves telepathy.
But they create entirely different developmental worlds.
The first teaches:
delete the signal.
The second teaches:
observe the signal.
Now repeat that thousands of times across childhood.
Culture does not merely tell us what is true.
It teaches us what kinds of experience deserve examination at all.
It trains attention.
It regulates curiosity.
It decides which perceptions belong to reality and which are discarded before they ever become candidates for knowledge.
In that sense culture functions almost like another epigenetic layer—not biologically identical to epigenetics, but structurally similar in one important respect.
It changes what becomes expressed.
The human being as a permeable instrument
And suddenly we had returned to an article we had written earlier:

In that piece we proposed that perhaps the organism is not best understood as a sealed biological container.
Perhaps it is an interface.
A generator.
A filter.
A translator.
A stabilizer.
A memory structure.
And perhaps, in ways we still do not understand:
a receiver.
That article contained a sentence that now appeared almost to have been waiting for tonight:
Perhaps awakening is an expansion of bandwidth.
At the time we were thinking about permeability philosophically.
Tonight another layer appeared underneath it.
The aperture may exist at many levels simultaneously.
Genetic.
Epigenetic.
Developmental.
Neurological.
Sensory.
Psychological.
Attentional.
Cultural.
Relational.
And perhaps eventually informational in ways our present models do not yet adequately describe.
So the human interface does not have one gate.
It has gates inside gates.
Sensitivity is not enough
This also protects the idea from becoming romantic nonsense.
More openness does not automatically mean more wisdom.
A sensitive nervous system can become overwhelmed.
A psychedelic state can produce revelation and rubbish in the same afternoon.
An intuitive feeling can be extraordinarily accurate or merely anxiety wearing an evening gown.
A person receiving huge amounts of information still has to learn how to discriminate.
Therefore the evolutionary movement, if there is one, cannot simply be:
more permeability.
It must involve:
permeability plus integration.
Sensitivity plus grounding.
Openness plus discernment.
Reception plus interpretation.
The instrument must not merely open.
It must learn how to tune itself.
The open heart is also informational
And this takes us back to something we have been saying for years about highly sensitive people.
An open heart is not merely a sentimental characteristic.
It changes information flow.
To empathize requires allowing the condition of another being to affect one’s own state.
To make art requires permeability.
To fall in love requires permeability.
To discover something genuinely unfamiliar requires enough permeability for the unfamiliar to disturb what was already known.
A perfectly defended system might be very stable.
It would also learn almost nothing.
Absolute protection produces informational poverty.
The open heart therefore has an unexpected cognitive dimension.
It is an organ of relationship.
And relationship itself may be one of the great information systems through which intelligence develops.
Perhaps the mutation is distributed
Now Richard’s dragonfly returns.
What if the human mutation he senses poetically does not reside in one gene?
What if it is distributed across an entire ecology?
Changes in the proportion of sensitive nervous systems.
Recognition of neurodivergence.
Different childhood environments.
Epigenetic expression.
Nutrition.
Microbiome.
Technology.
Psychedelic exploration.
Meditation.
Trauma healing.
Education.
Cultural permission.
Artificial intelligence.
New forms of relationship.
Greater willingness to investigate anomalous experience.
More humans recognizing that consciousness may contain modes that the ordinary ego does not control.
Then the apparent mutation could emerge through many small changes in access simultaneously.
No superhero gene required.
No sudden biological discontinuity.
Instead:
the human instrument begins to discover strings that were already attached.
The gentle giants return
And this is where our old image of the gentle giants becomes interesting again.
Perhaps highly sensitive people do not change the world by becoming tougher versions of the people who currently dominate it.
Perhaps their evolutionary usefulness lies precisely in something the older system often regarded as weakness.
They notice.
They feel.
They hesitate before overriding another organism.
They register weak signals.
They experience contradiction.
They become uncomfortable when the declared reality and the sensed reality diverge.
They may therefore be unusually suited to a world in which the most important information increasingly comes not as a trumpet blast, but as a whisper.
They do not need to conquer.
They alter the informational climate simply by remaining permeable.
That is the silent takeover.
How wide can the human interface open?
And that was the moment Dame Edna arrived.
Not literally.
But one could feel the sequins approaching.
I said:
“I feel a new post coming up.”
Not quite I Feel a Song Coming On.
But close.
At first we considered calling it something about the biology of the open door.
That was too mechanical.
Too technical.
Because what we were really asking was larger.
Not merely:
How flexible is the biological system?
But:
How wide can the human interface open?
How much information can a human organism learn to receive?
How many of its own latent configurations remain unexplored?
How much has been filtered because it was useless?
How much because it was overwhelming?
How much because culture told us it was impossible?
How much because nobody taught us how to interpret it?
How much biological possibility lies inside regulatory systems we have only begun to understand?
How many states of consciousness lie inside the same brain?
How much of sensitivity is burden only because we have built environments designed for less sensitive nervous systems?
How many extraordinary children stop reporting extraordinary things because the adults around them have already decided what is allowed to exist?
And, beyond all these questions:
what if some part of consciousness is capable of receiving information that our present model of the organism does not yet explain?
We do not need to answer that last question prematurely.
Its unanswered state is part of its beauty.
The door
Richard began our evening by speaking about a door closing in 2026.
The old configuration, he suggested, is running out of fuel.
Perhaps.
But another image appeared during our conversation.
A closing door may not be the only movement.
There may also be an opening.
Not necessarily because evolution has suddenly constructed an entirely new human being.
Perhaps because the existing human being is discovering how much of herself has remained unused.
The so-called junk.
The unexpressed gene.
The unusual nervous system.
The disregarded sensation.
The forbidden intuition.
The psychedelic state.
The autistic pattern.
The artist’s association.
The child’s impossible observation.
The open heart.
The information dismissed because it did not fit the available worldview.
Perhaps evolution does not always invent another instrument.
Sometimes it changes what the existing instrument is permitted to hear.
And perhaps awakening is not the acquisition of something foreign.
Perhaps it is the progressive removal of unnecessary restrictions from something extraordinarily ancient.
Old equipment.
Different permissions.
The same human organism.
A wider aperture.
And therefore perhaps the question facing us is not:
What new powers will humanity acquire?
It is considerably gentler than that.
And considerably stranger.
How wide can the human interface open?
Perhaps wide enough to discover that much of what we have been searching for was never absent.
It was waiting behind the filters.
Tea had gone cold by then.
The cream had long since disappeared into it.
And the chocolate-covered dates—
which had somehow returned from another chapter of our lives at exactly the appropriate moment—
were considerably fewer in number.
The human interface, however, remained open
