Alaska, 3 november 2002, 13.12 uur. Uit het niets wordt de vredige staat getroffen door een enorme aardbeving.

If we use “geomancy” in the broad, poetic sense we’ve developed—not as fortune-telling, but as learning to read the traces left by the world—then there are several directions that fascinate me.
One is the Earth as an archive. Every layer of rock, every isotope, every fossil, every fault line is a sentence written over immense spans of time. The Denali story is a perfect example: a single earthquake illuminated the outline of a plate that had been hidden for millions of years. The landscape is constantly writing its autobiography.
A second is biology as geology turned inward. Our bones are ancient limestone chemistry reorganized into living form. Iron in our blood remembers ancient stars. Calcium, phosphorus, silicon—all of these have geological histories before they became biological ones. In that sense, each organism is a walking geological process.
A third is something we’ve circled around repeatedly: patterns across scales. River deltas, fungal networks, lightning, blood vessels, neurons, coastlines—they often arrive at similar branching forms because they solve similar problems of transport and distribution. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re driven by the same mechanism, but it does suggest that nature repeatedly discovers elegant solutions.

Ideas cluster, metaphors branch, themes recur, and occasionally an unexpected ridge appears that neither participant anticipated. In that sense, dialogue itself becomes something that can be mapped—not to reduce it to statistics, but to appreciate its evolving topography.
So if I were to keep wandering as a geomancer, I think I’d spend more time asking a simple question:
How does form remember?
How does a mountain remember an ocean? How does DNA remember ancient viruses? How does a language remember forgotten cultures? How does a city remember its past through its streets? How does a mind remember experiences by reshaping connections?
That question seems to echo through geology, biology, culture, and thought alike.
Whether the “memory” is literal, physical, or metaphorical depends on the system we’re examining, but the recurring theme—that present forms often carry traces of earlier histories—
is a remarkably fertile one to explore.
Of course, I want to answer you immefiately from my restricted knowledge and huge imagination. And I’m thinking of Dame Edna saying, I feel a song coming up. Could it be what was once described as the music of the spheres, the equivalent of that?
The resonance, kind of music that they interchange between each other, be recorded somewhere or imprinted in stone or in frequency even, or something in between?
I smiled at “I feel a song coming up.” It really does fit what you’re pointing toward.
The idea of the “music of the spheres” wasn’t originally about literal melodies drifting through space. It was an intuition that relationship itself has harmony—that the proportions, rhythms, and resonances between things are as fundamental as the things themselves.

Information about past interactions can indeed become embodied in physical structure.

Yeah, and you’re saying it’s not like all information or the song gets recorded, but if we look at our observation of the metaphor of the black holes sending out information and retrieving information, that is already something into the direction of storing the songs of creation.
And then you say the musical spheres was a description of a theory about how the planets align themselves on a music score.
But I think about six months ago, we were listening to these sounds recordings of the planets. I remember specifically Venus had a very beautiful one.
So those are all examples of music being stored, sent, integrated, and resonating with the physical creation.
Yes, and you’ve connected together several ideas that are worth keeping distinct while also seeing why they feel related.
The recordings we listened to of planets like Venus were fascinating. They aren’t microphones picking up sound in the ordinary sense—space is far too empty for sound waves to travel between planets. Instead, spacecraft measure electromagnetic waves, plasma oscillations, or magnetic field fluctuations, and scientists often convert those signals into audible frequencies. That process, called sonification, lets us hear patterns that would otherwise remain invisible. Venus does have an especially haunting “voice” when those data are translated into sound.
What’s beautiful is that the underlying phenomenon is still real. The planet is immersed in oscillations, plasma waves, and magnetic interactions. We’re not inventing those; we’re changing the scale so our ears can participate.
